Google PageRank Explained

Monday, June 30th, 2008

There seems to be fair amount of confusion doing the rounds on the Internet with regards to what the Google PageRank is, and what all the fuss is about.

Considering the importance of the Google PageRank, allow me to clarify to the best of my abilities what this is, and why it has become so important.

Google as a search engine considers the Internet to be “democratic state”, where votes are cast by websites as to the popularity of other websites. In other words the more votes your website gets from other websites, by way of inbound links to your website, the more important (popular) your website will appear to Google.

Google interprets a link from Website 1 to Website 2 as a vote from Website 1 for Website 2, and so on. This means that the more inbound links you have, the higher your Google PageRank.

More recently Google has increased the variables on its PageRank algorithm to take into account not only the number of in bound links, but the quality of those inbound links.

Several other factors are now also considered when allocating the Google PageRank:

  • Contextual relevancy of the site linking to you.
  • PageRank of the site linking to you.
  • Content context of the site linking to you.
  • Keyword Relevancy.

Basically the quality of your incoming links matter just as much as the amount of inbound links. Links must come from a websites that are relevant. In other words, these websites should share many of your own keywords.

And that in a nutshell is what the Google PageRank is all about.

Good Luck and Happy Marketing.

Productive SEO - 6 Key Ways to SEO

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Every webmaster’s dream is to have an enormous, steady traffic so they can profit from it. One of the traffic-generating techniques that is frequently used is Search Engine Optimization. It will not only connect your visitors to your site, but it will also pull up your ranking. If you’d like to succeed with SEO, you cannot afford to ignore these 6 key ways:

1. Never link your site to a blacklisted site. This usually happens when webmasters are looking for faster way to improve their link popularity. Instead of resorting to white hat techniques, they turn to link farming. When major search engines identify the link farm, all websites that links to it are penalized.

2. Keep your content professional. Major search engines refuse to rank web pages that talks about racism or those that are gender-biased. They also look down to those that dispute or challenge other person’s religion. So, to make sure that you’ll get indexed, stay away from content that can offend anybody.

3. Avoid cloaking. Cloaking is a process of presenting a webpage version to a human visitor then another completely different version to search engines to get better ranking. This can initially pull up your page ranking, but it can seriously hurt your standing in the long run once search engines identify your unacceptable strategy.

4. Build powerful links. Linking to relevant websites with higher page ranking than you are is a powerful SEO strategy. So, start looking for websites that share your topic and send email to their webmasters to request reciprocal linking or better yet, one quality inbound link.

5. Use relevant keywords throughout your website. To have your website indexed by search engines, sprinkle relevant keywords on your content. You can also use your keywords on articles titles and of course, on your domain name.

6. Submit your site to search engines. Make it easier for search engines to find your site by directly submitting it to them. Concentrate on search engines that can promise better traffic like MSN, Yahoo! And Google.

SEO And Your Blog - Some Considerations Are A Must

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

I would like to share a few tips with you about SEO and your blog.

The term SEO stands for [S]earch [E]ngine [O]ptimization.

SEO may be more important on a blog that on a traditional website; however it is often taken for granted because of the fact that blogs get indexed quickly anyways. If fact, this makes using sound SEO strategies even more important.

Take a deep breath because what I’m talking about here is not an in-depth study into the finer workings of SEO. :-)

What we are really concerned with is merely a couple of the most critical areas.

#1 - Your Keywords <== single most important part of your blog.

Your main keyword tag, the one that says to Google; ‘My blog is about… {main keyword}’ should be used in your domain name, your main categories, your description and your title page. One word of extreme caution! Do Not Use Keyword Stuffing. This term refers to using the exact same keyword over and over. Keep the rule of thumb of 4%; meaning if you have 100 words on your title page, only use a particular keyword no more than 4 times.

Most blogs will use multiple keywords. Eg: Guitar lessons; Acoustic Guitar lessons; Guitar Tablature; etc.

When you are setting up your blog it is important to use the category function of a WordPress blog to target these keywords.

Therefore, you can have a category name for each keyword phrase and then post relevant content to that category based on the title. So if you have a category titled ‘Acoustic Guitar Lessons’, all the post in this category would relate to learning to

play acoustic guitar and not bass guitar.

Why are these steps important?

Google will index and rank each of your pages, posts and categories based on the same algorithm. This is why you may get a high rank for one post but never see another anywhere in searches. It is important to always consider the keywords in everything you do with your blog.

Inexpensive Web Hosting to Run your own Website!

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

If your products and services are not on the web, you are losing a lot of sales: Millions of potential sales. So as not to be left behind, create your website, now. You can only do this if you have a domain and Inexpensive Web Hosting.

Buying a domain name is quite easy. All you need is a domain registrar to register the URL for you. Domain names are cheap, too. For as low as $10, you can have that much coveted virtual address. However, in the case of web hosting, it is quite hard to find a reliable, professional and inexpensive one.

When looking for an inexpensive web hosting, webmasters and web owners usually go for the list of service provider with the cheapest services. However, this manner of looking for an inexpensive web hosting is wrong. Inexpensive doesn’t mean ‘the cheapest.’

A web hosting is considered to be inexpensive when its price is low for the features and benefits that the package offers. For instance, web host ABC says that it’s cheapest web hosting is at $2 a month, and when you see it, you want to bind yourself for 2 years worth of hosting services without even thinking about it. However, if you will look closely, that $2 hosting may only be for a meager 10MB of web space and without customer support.

On the other hand, web host XYZ offers web hosting for, let’s say, $10 a month. If you will compare XYZ’s price with ABC’s $2 hosting, you can easily spot which is the cheapest. Yet, in terms of features and benefits, XYZ’s have full of them, in fact with overflowing features and benefits.

Below are more tips on how to spot an inexpensive web hosting:

1. Look for the asterisk beside the package price. If the price for each package has an asterisk, BEWARE.

An asterisk or any other symbol (such as a plus) right beside the total amount of a package may mean that there’s a footnote below the page that you must read. And you must really read it. Sometimes the footnote is merely a disclaimer; however, most of the time, a footnote right beside the total amount corresponds to extra fees. It may mean that there are extra charges for this or that, which will automatically be added into your invoice once you checkout. This marketing tactic is more known to us as “Hidden Charges.” This is false advertising and many of us fall for it.

2. The service provider has a good client feedback.

If customers are satisfied, it means that the web hosting company has been meeting their needs and is keeping their promises. And with these, a web host deserves to be tried and tested.

3. Do a test drive.

Don’t sign up for a long period of time, say for a year or two. Sign up for a few months only to know if your chosen web host meets your expectations and demands. This way, you’ll also know if the web had held true from its promise of 99% uptime.

Did You go Broke with Google AdWords?

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Many people marketing a business on the Internet heard of Google AdWords at one point or another. You can do certain things to make Adwords profitable. Consequently, you can nearly lose your shirt as well if you lack a solid understanding of AdWords & how it really works.

Google is all about relevancy. Google places a huge emphasis on this for their users and this is a key central concept in understanding.

You can avoid getting charged $5 or $10 bucks for a click if you take some precautionary but often necessary steps.

1. Create an ad campaign that closely matches similar keywords.

For example, you sell dog grooming hair brushes.

Your initial thought may be to bid on keywords like “pet” and “pet supplies.” Google considers these as general keywords. People looking for dog grooming hair brushes will not most likely look for “pet supplies.”

The person looking for dog grooming hair brush already knows what he or she wants. You want your ad to target that person directly and your conversation rates will increase.

Group and bid on keywords like “dog grooming supplies,” “dog grooming brushes,” and “dog grooming hair brushes.” Each of these keyword phrases has one thing in common: the phrase “dog grooming.” These are relevant. Make sure each keyword in each ad group has one common word or phrase.

2. Make sure the body copy contains keywords.

When you write the actual copy for your ads, you need to have the keywords you bid on written into the ad.

This helps driver laser focused traffic to your site, Google rewords you by having a higher position for lower cost, your ad is shown more and you please the Google users because you provide exactly what they are looking for.

(Hint: The name of the game is relevancy).

3. Put your keyword in the Adwords ad headline, body and display URL address.

When someone searches for a specific keyword, all the listings that contain that keyword, wehther it is in the metatags, in the name of the web address or in the headline, are bolded to make it stand out to the searcher.

In this way, everyone wins. The user gets exactly what they searched for. Google wins because that user will return again due to his satisfaction. And ultimately, you benefit from it because you potentially gained a new subscriber or customer and that means cash in your pocket in the end.

4. Create a landing page for each keyword you bid on.

One of the tricks to getting higher relevancy and higher quality scores in Google’s mind is to drive traffic to very specific landing pages.

Each keyword you bid on should be slightly altered so when someone clicks on your ad, they still see the same keyword or something very similar to it in the headline and in the body of your copy on your website.

For example, you search for “dog trainers in Seattle.” You see an ad that says “Dog Trainers in Seattle.” You think to yourself this is exactly what you wanted. You click on the ad to go to the website.

The first thing you read on the web site is “3 Dog Trainers In Seattle Reveal Shocking Secrets that Show You How You Can Fix The Top 10 Most Common Dog Problems Without Having To Pay $1000s In Consultation Fees…All From The Comfort Of Your Own Home.”

This website tells you exactly what you are looking for. Fido has some problem you want to fix but yet you are on a budget. And you want someone you can go to locally, not someone who is based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

Why Search Engine Optimization Is Important To Your Future

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Building your website with search engine appeal - or search engine optimization - is more art than science but experience has shown that there are some very useful guidelines. The question is, why bother? With effective optimization you’ll attract free website traffic that the search engines will send you. Free traffic goes a long way towards not only making your site income-generating but, hopefully, profit-generating as well.

With search engine optimization you might even receive a high traffic volume. Letâ??s just say you have a conversion to successful sales with 5 to 10 percent of your traffic. If you get a hundred hits or more a day, you get a good number of sales already. If you get only twenty or so hits a day, you only get one or two sales if any at all. Higher traffic, especially if it’s free, means potentially higher revenue.

Search engine optimization involves a variety of methods for making your site appealing to the search engines, such as having relevant keywords, title and content. It also helps to have other similar sites linking to yours. The aim is to have your site listed in the search engine results and apearing in, preferably, the first two or three pages. The higher the better. This will ensure that your site is displayed in answer to public inquiries as being possibly relevant. In turn, this increases public awareness and directs more traffic to your site - traffic that could lead to potential sales, revenue and profit.

There are many locations on the internet that can help you improve search engine optimization, including those that help in tracking keyword phrases. For instance, the free Yahoo/Overture Suggestion Tool, as well as many commercial keyword analyzers. There are also some content writers and article directories that can provide suitable keyword-laden content for you.

However, most people performing a search examine only the ten top results, which are on the first page. Those entries further down the list languish, with little attention. So making it to the top three pages is a barometer of a site’s success in search engine optimization as you will get more people clicking through to your site when you have a higher ranking on these pages. And, as mentioned, more traffic means more business for you.

As you might have guessed, search engine optimization may require a fair bit of work to be fully realized. For instance, researching the keyword phrases that are popular for your niche or theme.

You may also need to rewrite your site’s contents so that you get the right keyword phrases in your site without making it too awkward to read. There are useful guidelines that can be followed to assist with this.

Also consider collaborating with other web sites to obtain link exchanges and page transfers. Having inbound links definitely increases search engine appeal. Possibly the best way of gaining these is to write quality articles on the subject of your website and submit them to article directories for others to use. This generates desirable one-way links from those who post your articles on their websites, and they have usually selected your article because of its relevance!

When you need help just search the internet. Tips, guidelines and methods for search engine optimization are abundant and easily found. There are also many articles freely available that can help you optimize your website. Just posing the question on Google or inquiring at your favorite article directory will quickly locate some of these. The more informed you are the better. But resist the temptation to buy ebooks when so much free information is available.

This all helps in getting those high rankings. It may require a little time and effort but the benefits can be astounding.

E-commerce is a cut throat business. You have to arm yourself with the knowledge and tools needed to make your site a cut above the rest. Each day, more and more sites clamber for higher rankings and, if you get careless, you may just get trampled and be left in cyber dust.

In recent years, and in the foreseeable future, search engines have been the most widely used internet sources of information. Use them well and prosper.

However, even with effective optimization in place, don’t just rest on your laurels; it is a continuing process. Check your ranking from time to time and also have a good look at what the top sites for a keyword are doing. Why do they have a higher ranking? What do you have to do to secure the top spot? Each day is a new day for all e-commerce sites or, as Scarlet O’Hara said: “Tomorrow is another day!”

PPC Success

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Pay-per-click advertising can add a valuable tool to your business campaign. With the right attitude and strategy, your PPC advertising can be a great success, yielding more visitors to your site and converting them into clients. However, without proper planning, your PPC advertising can become a floundering waste of time and money! Following some simple PPC advertising tips can help you maximize the profits you receive from your PPC advertising ads.

First of all, as in any online business campaign, you must carefully consider what keywords you are using to describe your product. A great way to distinguish yourself from your competition is to select unique keywords. Sometimes, your best tool is a good thesaurus.

For example, if you provide pet products, but only dog and cat products, a good way to stand out from the large retail chains is to use very specific keywords, such as “canine products”, “dog products”, “dog shampoo”, or “dog toys”. Using “pet products” would result in your campaign falling to the bottom of the advertisement list, since there are thousands of other sites with “pet products” in their PPC keywords.

When designing your ads, make it very clear what specific product you provide. It’s OK to include the name of your business; however, when you also focus your ads around your product, your customers won’t click unnecessarily on your ad just to find out what you provide. These unnecessary clicks result in wasted clicks where your customers won’t become clients because your product isn’t what they are looking for. A good way to maximize the efficiency of your ads is to put the actual keyword you use to describe your product on your advertisement, not just your business name.

Once you have your PPC ads launched, don’t become lazy and forget to track which ads are working, and which are not. It’s quite easy to track the visitor to client rate in most PPC provider programs. Simply figure out what percentage of your visitors are becoming customers for each advertisement. When you have an especially successful PPC ad, note how you have the ad designed. Note which colors, words, and setup you are using graphically with the advertisement. Also note the keywords you used and apply those same keywords throughout your page and in future PPC ads.

Some businesses prefer to pull their PPC ads after a successful run, and create new ads under the impression that they must continually refresh their advertisements. If you have a PPC ad that is still successful, there’s nothing wrong with continuing your campaign with the same ad! Also, you can add other PPC providers with the same ad to expose your product to new audiences in new sites. If you find that a certain ad style is giving you the greatest success, use this style in the future in new ways.

Most importantly, don’t forget to pay your PPC providers service! PPC works as long as you pay, unlike the more common SEO techniques that are often successful as well. With a solid PPC game plan you can extend your sites reach into new consumer dimensions and expand your internet campaign.

Earn Cash Writing Articles - Easy as 1-2-3

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Article writing is as easy as 1-2-3!
1) The opening paragraph gives your qualifications or grabs the reader and almost compels him or her to read further.
2) Your article will contain just two or three facts.
-Fact 1) Perfect grammar is not a necessity.
-Fact 2) The number of words in the typical article.
-Fact 3) Separate each paragraph.
3) The closing paragraph summarizes the article and provides a link to your site.

Many people are reluctant to write articles because they think it’s too difficult. That’s nonsense. Article writing is actually quite easy once you know the three-step formula (above). Others are reluctant to write because they do poorly with grammar or spelling. Do you need to use perfect grammar in your articles? Certainly not, but some sites will refuse to print your work if it is riddled with errors. Fortunately, there is a way around this for those that are grammatically challenged. Most of the word processors available today come with a spelling AND grammar checker. You should make full use of both of these features.

The ideal article contains just 500-600 words. Many submission sites will not accept articles with less than 500 words and will refuse those with more than 1000 words. In addition, it is sometimes difficult to keep a reader’s interest if it is over 700 or 800 words. (They didn’t come to the site to read a novel.) For that reason, I try to make sure that all of my articles have around 500 words.

Break your article up into a number of different paragraphs and separate each one by a space. This makes your article more pleasing to the eye. This is important because your readers will make his or her first judgment about your article based on the way it looks. And like anything else, you want your reader to have a good first impression.

Your first paragraph or two should tell the reader about your qualifications or entice him or her to read further. This is called ‘the hook’. In this piece, we are using a “hook” instead of the qualifications. Our hook lets the reader know that there is a formula to writing articles and we will divulge this information in the article.

The next paragraph or two should discuss the facts, information, or points you wish to make. Each of these paragraphs should discuss the benefits as well as features. The benefits will grab the reader and let him know why it is important to him.

Close the article with an offer for more information by clicking your link. I prefer to use a free information offer as many more people will click through for a free report. If instead, you ask readers to: ‘Visit our site for more information,’ only about one third as many readers will click through. For that reason, I prefer the following: For more information on the subject, download our FREE REPORT at YOUR-SITE-NAME.

SEO - 2 First Steps to SEO

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Seo is of course search engine optimization, but it makes for a whole lot easier typing if I do not spell it out! But seriously, seo is pretty important.

Seo is one of the most important things you can do for traffic generation long term. You see, in the short term, seo is not really that important. When you are first getting started, you really need the direct traffic, and you need it fast. Seo can takes months to take effect, and sometimes it moves up and down. You are number one for weeks and then you fall out of place. It just happens â?” but when you have many pages and many sites it affects you less than when you first get started and you only have a few sites.

Seo is just really a long term strategy, but the changes take awhile to take place â?” so you have to work on it now, while you are small, and it will help you get big. That is the bottom line. You have to work on seo now.

So what are the first 2 steps to seo?

1) You have to have your keywords on your web pages. I like to have my keywords on my titles, in my content, in my heading tags, and in my description tag.

2) You have to get backlinks to your web site. I like to use article marketing and web directory submission to do this. Article marketing can create faster inbound links than web directory submission, but the web directory submitting can help you get longer lasting links.
